‘Wong Kids’ in Manila

“Worth cheering for,” and “Exuberantly imaginative adventure for children,” the New York Times wrote of The Wong Kids in the Secret of the Space Chupacabra Go!

The Ma-Yi Theater Company, a well-known Filipino-Asian fixture in New York, brings the merry romp to Manila at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Little Theater.

Dragons, robots, frogs and even rocks, fly, gobble up things and speak, and wonder of wonders, help the Wong kids overcome bullying and their childhood insecurities.

Using a mix of action-driven storytelling, puppetry, and visual magic, ‘The Wong Kids’ transports its audience into the far reaches of the galaxy

“A must see… filled with imagination, spontaneity, comedy and heart, it is both moving and hilarious,” is the Times Square Chronicles’ review of playwright Lloyd Suh’s work.

Song, dance, some acrobatics, great original music, playground sets flown in by Philippine Airlines—there’s never, ever, a dull moment in this fast-paced, three-ring-circus.

Tanghalang Pilipino’s Actors Company veterans shift to speaking English with their talent intact: Aldo Vencilao, Blanche Buhia, Aika Zabala, Jonathan Tadoian, Marco Viaña, and Juliene Mendoza.

Music lovers will delight to the sounds and songs by Shane Rettig. The sets are by Meredith Ries, costumes by Mio Infante, and lighting by Barbie Tantiongco.

Best of all is Ralph B. Peña’s direction—clever, funny, original!  Ma-Yi Executive Director Jorge Z. Ortoll is himself a well-known former stage actor in Manila.

The Wong Kids in the Secret of the Space Chupacabra Go! is presented in association with Tanghalang Pilipino and Philippine Airlines with the support of Stage Craft International. It runs until Sept. 25, with shows at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the CCP Little Theater.

For inquiries, contact CCP Marketing 832-3704/3706 or Tanghalang Pilipino at 832-1125 loc. 1620-1621.
