Soil and Stones, Souls and Songs, a major traveling exhibition based on the effects that China’s transformation has brought to the world, is scheduled to open at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) on Sept.6.
The country plays a dominant role in unleashing the forces of global market based on its seismic metamorphosis over the past decade.
It has modified the forms of production, labor, landscape and environments, as well as wider societal structures. This motion has given birth to revisionisms of past issues and founding myths in the face of historical and ecological threats.
While many stories can be traced to the nation, Soil and Stones, Souls and Songs primarily focuses on the changes on Earth with shifting geopolitical order in the postcolonial and post-Cold War Era, with the unease and violence that accompanies the reconstruction of traditional economic and cultural patterns.
The exhibit will highlight art practices, case studies, new commissions and certain artworks from the Kadist Collection, an interdisciplinary organization. It includes international artists such as Pio Abad, Kawayan De Guia, Edgar Fernandez, and José Maceda (Philippines); Josh Faught, James T. Hong (USA); Sheela Gowda, Prabhakar Pachpute (India); TrÆ°Æ¡ng Công Tùng (Vietnam); Peter Kennedy and John Hughes (Australia); Li Binyuan and Li Ran (China); Pratchaya Phintong and Chulayarnnon Siriphol (Thailand); Abdoulaye Konaté (Mali); Ion Grigorescu (Romania); Shitamichi Motoyuki (Japan); Walter Smetak (Brazil); Dominique Zinkpé (Benin); Jimmie Durham (Italy).
Other participants will be Mariana Castillo Deball (Mexico / Germany); Meschac Gaba (Benin / Netherlands); Simryn Gill (Australia / Malaysia); Taloi Havini (Papua New Guinea / Australia); He Xiangyu (China / Germany); Haegue Yang (South Korea / Germany); Trevor Yeung (Hong Kong); and Tuguldur Yondonjamts (USA / Mongolia).
Soil and Stones, Souls and Songs is organized by Kadist Art Foundation, based both in Paris and San Francisco, in collaboration with Para Site, Hong Kong and MCAD, Manila.
The event is curated by Cosmin Costinas and Inti Guerrero, both members of the Independent Curators International, a hub that connects exhibit directors with art spaces.
The show will run till Dec. 4.
MCAD is located at the DLS-CSB School of Design and Arts (SDA) campus, Dominga Street, Malate, Manila.
