The Philippine women’s national team made it to the ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship 2019 semifinals.
But their bid to reach their finals ended when the Filipinas absorbed a 1-2 setback at the hands of Vietnam in the semifinals last Sunday at the Institute of Physical Education in Chonburi, Thailand.
An errant back pass by the Vietnamese defense in the 35th minute looped over the goalkeeper for an own goal.
But, Vietnam made up for this when they found the equalizer six minutes later for a 1-all halftime score.
The game was tied at the end of regulation and Vietnam frustrated the Philippines’ final hopes with the marginal goal in the 57th minute.
Head coach Marnelli Dimzon praised her team in their effort to reach the semis.
“This group of players have a lot of potential in them. Our campaign here bids well for the upcoming tournaments that this team will compete in,” said Dimzon.
The Philippines will still have a chance for a podium finish when they face Myanmar in the playoffs for 3rd and 4th places on Tuesday.
The Filipinas reached the semis following a 4-0 win over Singapore in the final Group A match last Friday.
