Tagum City—The five-day Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Sports Institute Grassroots Coaching Certification Program gets underway today at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex here.

PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said that coaches’ education is vital in upgrading the standards and raising the level of efficiency of coaches and competitiveness of athletes at the grassroots level.

“If the coaches improve, the athletes will also improve,” he said during a recent press conference at the sidelines of the joint Department of Education-PSC National Sports Planning Workshop in Davao City.

PSC consultant Prof. Henry Daut, who will tackle Sport/Coaching Philosophy & Sport Pedagogy, said the Grassroots Coaching Certification Program is a multi-level (Levels I, II, III) course for elementary, secondary and tertiary coaches.

The five-day program, according to him, consists of two days theoretical and three-day sports specific training that would require to pass written examination and practical skills demonstration.

Lecturers of the theoretical courses are experts in sports science and related fields, among others, while the sports specific training will be conducted by national coaches.

“Davnor will host the pilot run of the program with 70 elementary and high school coaches from public and private schools. It is designed to provide coaches the foundation for successful coaching by enhancing their knowledge and competencies to improve the quality of sports in the schools,” said Daut.

The Level 1 Course consists of Sports Philosophy/Principles of Coaching, Sports Ethics, Sport Physiology, Sport Psychology, Talent Identification, Sport Pedagogy, and Sport Specific Skills Training.
