Two lawmakers from Mindanao filed House Bill No. 4585 to deter and counter violent extremism.

Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman and Anak Mindanao Rep. Amihilda Sangcopan authored the proposed measure to address the problem of terrorism, following the recent string of bombings in Mindanao.

“Violent extremism has no place in a peace-loving society, such as ours. It takes lives, hurts people, stunts progress and strikes fear into the heart of peaceful communities,” the lawmakers’ explanatory note read.

The measure defines extremism as act that “corrupts religious beliefs and distorts moral standards to serve a vicious end: That is to pursue a political cause through acts of terrorism.

Last June, a military camp in Indanan, Sulu was bombed that left five people dead, while violent extremist groups bombed a public market in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat last Sept. 7, during which seven people were hurt.

On Sept. 9, one bombing incident occurred and took the life of the suicide bomber herself.

“This bill is aimed to reduce and address violent extremism and terrorism, and encourage rebels to return to the folds of the law,” Hataman said.
