The so-called Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives has questioned the newly-enacted Tax Reform Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law before the Supreme Court.

Lawmakers led by Bayan Muna Party-list Representative Carlos Zarate went to the high tribunal today.

They filed a petition for certiorari against the measure that was meant to implement the tax reform program of the Duterte administration.

They are also asking the Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop the enforcement of the new law.

The petitioners say, the measure did not go through proper legislative procedure in the House of Representatives.

They claim there was lack of quorum and there was no voting done when the House leadership passed the final version of the bill previously approved by the Bicameral Conference Committee.

The lawmakers also believe the public will not benefit from the TRAIN law.

They say even if measure reduces personal income taxes, ordinary citizens will still bear the brunt of increases in prices of goods that the law will trigger.

Makabayan bloc says the TRAIN law is anti-poor.
