The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recognized on Friday the 56 Philippine universities and colleges that made it to the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, noting an increase of 93 percent from last year’s figures.
In a news release, CHED said the results highlight the country’s dedication to integrating the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the academic frameworks and operations of the participating higher education institutions (HEIs).
Several HEIs secured spots within the top 100 for specific SDG goals, highlighting their focused efforts in the following areas: no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, climate action, peace, justice and strong institutions.
“This collective effort reflects the growing understanding that universities have a vital role to play in addressing global challenges,” said CHED Commissioner Prospero de Vera III, lauding the schools’ commitment to global benchmarks and the strategic integration of SDGs into their programs.
“We are witnessing a paradigm shift where universities are actively integrating social development goals into their core mission,” De Vera added, underlining the vital contribution of education to achieving the UN’s ambitious goals.
CHED noted that this impressive growth continues a positive trend, marking the sixth consecutive year of increased Philippine representation in these international rankings. Notably, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) remains a strong performer, securing a position in the 201-300 bracket overall.
Meanwhile, Ifugao State University (IFSU) has emerged as a new contender, tying with the University of the Philippines and De La Salle University as one of the top-performing Philippine institutions in its debut ranking, according to the CHED.
