It’s easier to skirt responsibility. People with deep pockets and names that quickly ring bells can grow arrogant and out of touch. It’s a rare breed of men who will recognize the chasm-wide unevenness between the unprincipled rich and the economically marginalized.
The Burgos Circle Car Club, a group of corporate generals, policy makers, and sports cars enthusiasts, tag teamed and went well beyond the usual. The club members, some of them with multinational blood supply, and to whom dignity means a lot, decided over cups of coffee that it was time for a turnaround and break the failure chain.
Bonifacio Global City is a neighborlike place heavy with cultural and entertainment activities and first-chop little restaurants, highly developed with sensible urban plans of streets spiced with sleek buildings, open air spaces, and an absence of long and honking traffic snarls. The coffee shops get busy particularly on weekends and it is within this atmosphere of bright morning sky and the warm perfume of freshly brewed coffee where the Burgos Circle Car Club initialized its Sports Car For A Cause project. Last year the car club in partnership with the Bonifacio Global City and the Tradeshow International as event organizer, plus contributing sponsors, and several money guys, students from the Gat Andres Bonifacio High School got the much needed boost to improve their circumstances. This year, the project’s beneficiary is the Sisters of Mary Schools, Phils. and selected students who are taking up courses related to automotive skills.
Along 4th Avenue last weekend a row of gleaming, classic sports cars turned heads, stopped pedestrians on their tracks, and set pulses racing. Complimented as autocrats of the road, sports cars the likes of Ferrari, Ford GT, Porsche, Maserati, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Aston Martin, Lotus, Lamborghini, Ford Mustang, Jaguar, McLaren, Austin Healey, Rolls Royce, Bugatti, Corvette, and Delorean are so engineered with precise details that their timeless design has set them in class and zone of their own, yet appeal to multiple senses.
Unlike the more practical and efficient family sedans and SUVs, a sports car has been the totem pole, the visual confirmation of one’s making It.
It’s a car that has skewed the merits of commuter transportation — even if some sport bucket seats are tailored to be kind on the posterior — but certainly has a whole lot to do with the skill and euphoria of driving it and of expressing one’s individuality. It’s what draws sports car drivers to this beauty: high-performance athlete on the road or racetrack, excellent drifts, quick sprints, reliability on high-speed bends and sneaky curbs, or on long straights. It always leaves indelible impressions. Open-top roadster… fixed-roof coupe. It never fails.
Young people are our bridge to the future. The importance of long-term thinking, such as this Sports Car For A Cause project, will positively produce flurries of changes in the students’ lives and help facilitate their coming forth as the next generation leaders and economy upsurgers. Once in a while, it’s good to get out of the office or the comfort zones and clink cups of coffee to retain one’s perspective. We become stronger the wider we open our arms and heart.
