Local pug dies after sparring session

SUPERFLYWEIGHT Jeffrey Claro died yesterday after falling into a coma following a sparring session on Friday at a gym in Mandaluyong.

The Palawan native, who had a professional record of 1 win and 4 losses, was practicing for a possible fight in November.

Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chairman Baham Mitra, together with the boxer’s family and representatives of Naris Singwangcha foundation, was at the hospital when the superflyweight contender passed away.

The GAB helped in making arrangement for the funeral service at the Veronica Memorial Chapel in Pasay City.

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) sent its condolences to the family of Claro who passed away at the Ospital ng Maynila this morning according to Mitra who had closely monitored the boxer’s condition after he fell into a coma in the hospital.

Singwangcha, a known Thai philanthropist donated US$1,000 to the family of Claro, whose last fight was on May 26 in Antipolo City where he won by unanimous decision over Oscar Lim. It was his first win after four professional fights.

The GAB, in statement posted on its Facebook page, said Claro was among the group of boxers “that was found by GAB to have fake CT scan and was asked to submit a new CT Scan with plates included.”

Claro’s license was not revoked but he was not allowed to fight again until he submits a new CT scan.

Previously, Claro’s fight was postponed twice due to tooth extraction and after he suffered UTI.
