A magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur on Sunday at 9:19 a.m.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it was tectonic of origin, with the epicenter located 22 kilometers northeast of Tandag town.

Intensity 2 quake was experienced in Bislig, Surigao del Sur while Intensity 1 was registered in Borongan, Eastern Samar.

According to Phivolcs, there was no reported damage to properties because of the quake.

Last month, various government agencies held simultaneous earthquake drills to prepare citizens in the event a big one hit the country.

Participants were briefed during the nationwide “Duck, Cover and Hold” shake drill on how to protect themselves during an earthquake:

When in a high-rise building, move against an interior wall if you are not near a desk or table. Protect your head and neck with your arms. Do not use elevator.

When outdoors, move to a clear area away from trees, signs, buildings, or downed electrical wires and poles.

When on a sidewalk near buildings, duck into a doorway to protect yourself from falling bricks, glass, plaster and other debris.

When driving, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Avoid overpasses and power lines. Stay inside your vehicle until shaking stops.

When in a crowded store or other public place, move away from display shelves containing objects that could fall. Do not rush for the exit.

When in a stadium or theater, stay in your seat, get below the level of the back of the seat and cover your head and neck with your arms.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum warned that with an Intensity 8 earthquake, the scenarios of fire incidents, collapsed structures and hazardous traffic incidents would occur.

“You will not be able to move during such strong quake,” said Solidum, whose office made a warning that a massive quake would occur if the Valley Fault System moves.

“No one can predict when will it happen. So, we must be prepared as individual persons. Our safety is really dependent on our awareness and preparedness during the earthquake,” Solidum added.
