Empowering youth to champion sustainability
SM Supermalls solidified its dedication to sustainability during last month’s Earth Hour, extending beyond the symbolic lights-off with engaging activities that empowered young people and the public to embrace eco-friendly practices.
On March 23, a total of 85 SM malls nationwide, including SM City Clark and SM City Cebu, participated in the annual Global Lights Switch Off by reducing energy usage by 50 percent and turning off mall signages and lighting in key areas. But SM’s commitment went a step further.
At SM North EDSA, K-Pop fans used their lightsticks for illumination during Earth Hour, while participating in eco-friendly pre-fan activities like a “Plastic Waste Collection Idol Challenge.” Similarly, customers at SM Lanang and SM City Grand Central unplugged and enjoyed acoustic sessions and fan gatherings.
SM Malls promoted sustainability beyond the event. The SM Store offered “Green Retail Finds,” and ACE Hardware showcased solar light solutions. Customers were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly habits through practical tips and resource conservation initiatives.
SM City San Mateo and SM City Marikina provided dedicated waste collection bins for plastic and e-waste disposal, promoting responsible waste management throughout the year.
During the Earth Hour, SM Supermalls, alongside its social responsibility arm SM Cares, empowered Filipinos to go beyond a symbolic gesture. By fostering a spirit of collective action and providing practical solutions, SM aims to create a lasting impact on energy conservation and climate change awareness.
SM Cares is the heart of SM Supermalls’ social responsibility efforts. It spearheads programs that promote sustainability and community development, encompassing initiatives for Women and Breastfeeding Mothers, Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens, Children and Youth, and the Bike-Friendly SM movement.
