DAVAO CITY—A total of 23 Dabawenyos who qualified for the law assistance program under the Educational Benefits System Unit of the City Government of Davao have formally signed their contracts.

EBSU Technical Assistant Emilio Domingo, Jr. said 20 of the law students will receive full scholarship, while the remaining three will have a 50-percent scholarship grant.

The contract specified, among others, that to maintain their benefits, they should meet all the requirements, including good grades in College and a certification from the City Social Services and Development Office that they are indeed indigents.

The law school scholars are enrolled in schools in the city, such as the Ateneo de Davao University, the University of Mindanao, Jose Maria College and Rizal Memorial Colleges.

Amir Essam Ibrahim, a second year law student at the University of Mindanao, said the scholarship would be of great help to him.

“I am so thankful to the city government for this opportunity because it can help people like me in realizing my dream to become a lawyer,” he said.

Glazyle Gamy Aragon, a working student also found the scholarship helpful—especially in terms of financial aspect.

“I feel so blessed that I qualified for the scholarship, especially so that I am a working student and I struggled to manage my studies and work. Now that I have the scholarship, it can help me make my dreams of becoming a lawyer come true,” she said.

In addition to the full and half tuition fee scholarship grants, the scholars will also receive P8,000 in book allowance.

One of Mayor Sara Duterte’s priorities under the Byaheng DO30 agenda is education.

In 2017, she issued Executive Order No. 11 to further strengthen the educational assistance program of the City Government of Davao and to accommodate more students who wanted to study law.

Students taking medicine could also apply for a similar scholarship.
