The Manila International Airport Authority plans to spend about P500 million to expand the capacity of Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 which is being used by Philippine Airlines.
“Actually, it [rehabilitation] is in the process of detailed engineering construction,” MIAA general manager Eddie Montreal said.
“It might augment the capacity because we are planing to extend the space right in front,” he said.
Montreal said the Naia Terminal 2 rehabilitation was expected to be completed next year.
PAL operates domestic and international flights at Naia 2.
PAL earlier said it submitted an unsolicited proposal to build a P20-billion passenger terminal beside its current hub at Naia Centennial Terminal 2 to expand passenger capacity.
The proposed terminal would be designed to handle 12 million to 15 million passengers a year and would have aerobridges capable of serving 12 to 17 wide-bodied and single aisle jets.
PAL said the construction of the new terminal was expected to start by December 2020 and would be operational by July 2021.
Naia’s four terminals currently host a total of 42 million passengers a year, representing 12 million or 40 percent more than their designed capacity of 30 million.
Constructing a new, 89,000-square-meter air terminal north of Naia 2 would help decongest the airport and provide PAL passengers a bigger space, amenities and modern conveniences.
PAL’s proposed annex building will rise on a 16-hectare area adjacent to Naia 2, spanning the now-defunct Philippine Village Hotel, the former Nayong Pilipino complex and a property owned by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.
Aside from the passenger terminal, the complex will include a multi-level parking for 1,000 vehicles, a new cargo terminal and ground service facilities.
