Agriculture prepares to cushion El Niño

The Agriculture Department has drafted a series of measures to cushion the impact of an impending dry spell prompted by reports of El Nino hitting Region 2.

The El Niño Mitigation and Adaptation Plan aims to lessen the impact of El Niño to the agriculture sector and restore agricultural productive capacity for the next cropping season in areas that may be affected by drought, the department said Friday.

The department also created the National El Niño Task Force to monitor and coordinate various programs with its regional field offices, concerned bureaus, attached agencies and corporations and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to ensure proper actions are taken.

The department urged affected farmers to report damages and losses on their crops to municipal, city and provincial agriculturists, who will relay and coordinate the information to their respective Agriculture Regional Office for provision of assistance.
