Baguio enforces environment laws

BAGUIO CITY—The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) is boosting the implementation of laws protecting the environment with the arrest and filing of cases against those violators of pollution ordinances.
BCPO Director Col. Ruel Tagel said last week the police recently apprehended 18 motor vehicle owners for using mufflers that produce loud noise.
“We have a decibel meter that we used in apprehending. We ask that motor vehicle owners be responsible because there are people who are disturbed, especially in the evening and dawn when vehicle owners start their cars,” he said.
He added all 10 police stations here are equipped with the gadget to allow them to implement the laws.
In a report to the city government, Tagel said the decibel meters are being used in checkpoint operations and in flagging down motorcycles and vehicles that make excessive noise.
Tagel also warned residents who burn their garbage.
“It is a violation of the national laws and we have already warned some residents about it. We will continue to give warnings and inform them of the laws so that they will be apprised or reminded,” he said.
