The electrifying energy of a global basketball icon descended upon Manila last week as NBA superstar Ja Morant brought his “Make Them Watch” tour to the Philippines.
The visit left a powerful impact, inspiring a new generation of professional and aspiring athletes with his presence and passion for the game.
Morant’s tour stop at The Courtyard in Bonifacio Global City was the centerpiece of the event.
He was there to witness a thrilling exhibition game between the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers and a young, talented squad of pros called Team 12, a group that represented the grit and passion of local “barangay” basketball.
The atmosphere was electric, with fans and players alike eager to see the Memphis Grizzlies guard up close. “Ja Morant is one of the most explosive players in the NBA, if not the most explosive player,” remarked San Miguel Beer’s Jeron Teng, who played on the DLSZ team alongside Ricci Rivero. The opposition, Team 12, featured rising stars like Rhenz Abando and CJ Cansino, showcasing the rich tapestry of talent that defines Philippine basketball.

During halftime, Morant stepped onto the court himself for a moment that quickly became the highlight of the event.
With a powerful leap, he attacked the rim and threw down a thunderous dunk—a triumphant moment of redemption. This spectacular slam erased the memory of a near-disaster just two days prior during his China tour, where a dunk attempt ended with him slipping and colliding with his partner mid-air.
“I’m just excited to be here,” Morant said, visibly thrilled to be in front of the adoring Filipino crowd. This was the final event of the Manila leg of his tour, supported by Nike.
As part of his inaugural international tour, Morant took a break from his pre-season NBA training to connect with athletes in four different countries.
The “Make Them Watch” tour is more than just a series of appearances; it’s a mission to empower the next generation of hoopers, helping them develop their own unique style and find their voice on the court.
Morant’s day in Manila was filled with meaningful interactions. It began with an intimate session at the Nike Fort store, where he met with young local athletes, sharing words of wisdom and encouragement. He spent time with other aspiring players, all eager to learn from one of the most dynamic and exciting figures in the sport today. The day ended with a heartfelt gesture from the local community: a unique, one-of-a-kind necklace with a pendant adorned with colorful raw stones—a beautiful and symbolic tribute to his vibrant, colorful game.
