Perpetual gets twice-to-beat semifinal edge

JEMALYN Menor delivered a strong performance with 17 points to power the Perpetual Lady Altas to a convincing 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 victory over the San Sebastian Lady Stags in the NCAA Season 101 women’s volleyball tournament on Friday at the San Andres Sports Complex.

The Pangasinan native produced 15 attack points and two aces, while also contributing eight digs to help Perpetual secure its 10th win in 12 games.

Cyrille Almeniana added 14 points for the Lady Altas, built on 12 attacks and two service aces, along with three excellent receptions.

Running the offense smoothly was setter Fifi Ariola, who recorded a game-high 25 excellent sets out of 107 attempts, while libero Joanna Denise Lozano anchored the defense with 23 digs and 10 receptions.

For San Sebastian, Juna Mae Gonzales paced her squad with 10 points.

With the victory, Perpetual has secured a twice-to-beat edge with at least the No. 1 or No. 2 spot heading into the semifinals, with just one elimination-round game remaining against Mapua Lady Cardinals on Sunday. Dennis Abrina

The Lady Stags, meanwhile, dropped to 5-8 and remain in danger of slipping into a play-in match, potentially against the JRU Lady Bombers.

In other results, the unbeaten Letran Lady Knights improved to 12-0 after outlasting the Arellano Lady Chiefs in five sets, 25-14, 24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 15-10.

Earlier, the Arellano Chiefs edged the Letran Knights in a thrilling five-set duel, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14, to improve to an 8-4 record while Letran slipped to 6-6.
