THE Philippines’ hosting of the prestigious Karate 1 Youth League is being hailed as a transformative moment for the country’s grassroots development in karatedo.
Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation president Richard Lim said the staging of the global youth tournament from May 14 to 17 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena will open new doors for young Filipino athletes aspiring to compete on the world stage.
“This is the first time that we are hosting this in Manila. We have hosted the Asian championships and the Asian Cadets before. Now, we have the Youth League. Now, with the tournament, we are able to develop our youth at the grassroots level,” said Lim during the event’s official launch.
Recognized as the world’s premier international youth karate competition under the World Karate Federation, the Karate 1 Youth League serves as a key pathway for developing future elite and Olympic-level athletes.
Organizers expect around 3,000 young karatekas from nearly 100 countries to participate, surpassing turnout numbers from recent editions held in Fujairah and Saudi Arabia. Around 500 international and local officials are also expected to attend, highlighting the tournament’s global scale.
Lim emphasized the importance of strengthening the country’s talent pipeline.
“Iilan lang ang players natin sa senior level. We need to develop younger ones who can follow their footsteps,” he said.
The event’s staging is also expected to inspire a new generation of Filipino karate practitioners, giving them rare exposure to high-level international competition without leaving home soil.
Joining Lim at the launch were Patrick Gregorio, chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, and Abraham Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee. They were accompanied by SM Mall of Asia Arena executive Arnel Gonzales and MILO sports executive Carlo Sampan.
