Osorio outlasts Vekic to claim inaugural Philippine Women’s Open title

Revenge was sweet for Camila Osorio on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

In a grueling 151-minute marathon, the Colombian standout upended top seed Donna Vekic, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, to capture the singles crown at the first-ever 2026 Philippine Women’s Open WTA 125.

The victory marked a milestone for the 24-year-old Osorio, serving as her fourth career title and her first-ever WTA trophy won outside her home country of Colombia.

A Clash of Styles

The match was a study in stylistic contrasts. Vekic, the world-renowned 29-year-old with 15 career finals under her belt, initially dictated the tempo with deep, punishing groundstrokes and aggressive net play. That power-first approach mirrored their only previous meeting—a straight-sets victory for Vekic at the 2022 Cincinnati Masters.

However, the world No. 84 Osorio refused to be bullied. Utilizing her trademark scrambling defense and relentless counter-punching, she forced Vekic into extended rallies that eventually wore down the favorite.

“I have no words to describe how I’m feeling right now,” a jubilant Osorio said. “I’m super, super happy to be here in the Philippines. It’s been a great week, and hopefully, I can play here many more times.”

Closing the Door

The drama peaked in a see-saw third set. Locked at 5-5, Osorio drew Vekic to the net with a series of delicate short balls, forcing errors that led to a critical service break. Serving for the championship at 6-5, Osorio showed no nerves, punctuated the 12th game with a blistering winner and an ace to seal the title.

For her efforts, Osorio took home $15,500 and 125 ranking points. Vekic, who remains stuck at four career titles, earned $8,400 and 81 points as the runner-up.

In the doubles final held earlier in the day, second seeds Eudice Chong (Hong Kong) and Liang En-shuo (Chinese Taipei) staged a resilient comeback to upset the top-seeded duo of Quinn Gleason (USA) and Filipina-American favorite Sabrina Santamaria.

After dropping the first set, Chong and Liang dominated the tiebreak in the second before clutching out the match tiebreak to win 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-7.
