Beermen repluse Tropang Giga, move within a win away from PBA Title

The San Miguel Beermen are one step closer to their ultimate goal.

Overcoming a sluggish start and an injury scare to their cornerstone, the Beermen dispatched the TNT Tropang Giga, 96-82, in Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals on Friday night at the Ynares Center. The victory gives San Miguel a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, putting them just one win away from successfully defending their crown.

Turning the Tide

The night didn’t start in San Miguel’s favor. TNT stormed out to an early 23-7 lead, threatening to run away with the momentum. However, the Beermen remained composed, clawing back to trail by just one at the half, 48-47.

The game changed for good in the third quarter. Led by a balanced offensive assault, San Miguel exploded for 30 points while stifling TNT’s offense, coasting to a 77-61 advantage by the end of the period.

The “Kraken” Rises

Nine-time MVP June Mar Fajardo was once again the focal point, finishing with a dominant 18 points and 16 rebounds. His night was briefly interrupted late in the third quarter when he left the floor due to an injury scare.

While Fajardo remained on the bench until the 6:13 mark of the fourth, TNT was unable to capitalize on his absence. Upon his return, the “Kraken” effectively slammed the door on any comeback hopes, anchoring a defense that kept the Tropang Giga at bay.
