CADDIES of the Club Intramuros Golf Course (CIGC) have taken on a new role beyond assisting golfers, volunteering as caddie marshals every Sunday to help keep the historic course clean, safe, and orderly as it opens its fairways to the public.
Beginning November last year, CIGC temporarily paused regular golf operations on Sundays to transform the course into a green recreational space for families, residents, and visitors seeking a relaxing outdoor escape within the walled city of Intramuros.
To ensure smooth operations during public access days, volunteer caddies serve as marshals, providing visitors with briefings on safety guidelines and proper conduct inside the course.
Violeta Cabugngan Borlado, one of the caddie volunteers, said their task includes orienting guests on the “dos and don’ts”, while reminding them to respect the grounds and other visitors.
“Kung may dalang pets, siguraduhing lilinisin ang dumi ng kasamang hayop. Bawal magkalat kahit saan sa loob ng course,” Borlado said.
She added that picnics are allowed as long as visitors practice proper waste disposal. “Puwede mag-picnic at magdala ng pagkain at inumin, basta lilinisin ang kalat pagkatapos,” she said.
In return for their three-hour volunteer service every Sunday, the caddie marshals are allowed to play on the golf course the following Tuesday—an incentive that fosters both camaraderie and shared responsibility in caring for the course.
The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), which oversees CIGC, said the golf course is open to the public every Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., while regular golf operations continue from Mondays to Saturdays.
Visitors are encouraged to enjoy light outdoor activities such as walking and jogging along designated cart paths, picnicking in identified grassy areas, and participating in group exercises like stretching and yoga.
