PLAYING better than ever, the Dubberstein sisters’-led Philippine team pulled off two more wins to barge into the playoffs of the 2025 Pan Continental Curling Championships.
The Filipinas first outplayed Ling Yue Hung’s Hong Kong side, 11-3, before subduing the winless Phichayathida Jaosap-skippered Thailand, 12-0, when action was over at women’s B matches at Eveleth Minnesota.
“They are playing better as a team with each game and it shows in this latest bout against this Hong Kong team,” said coach Miggy Gutierrez.
This put the Philippines way ahead in the solo lead with their five consecutive wins.
The Filipinas, captained by Kathleee Dubberstein, are in front of Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico, led by Emily Pinelli’s prevailed over Brazil, 10-5, but lost to Kazakhstan, 3-9.
This kept Puerto Rico at no. 2 spot, and despite their setback, they still reached the playoff round with the Filipinas.
“Happy we clinched a playoff spot, but want to continue the momentum these last couple of games before the playoffs,” added Gutierrez.
In their first game of the day, Hong Kong took a 1-0 lead, before the Filipinas snatched the momentum off two stones in third end.
In their second encounter, the Filipinas raced to a 10-0 spread after four ends.
In men’s action, Marc Pfister’s Philippine squad bowed to China, 5-7, and is near the bottom of the standings at 1-4.
Team USA moved up with Canada, posting win no. 5 off an 11-4 smashing of New Zealand, while Canada downed Australia, 8-2.
