Korean idol and actor Cha Eun-woo said nothing has been finalized regarding reports of a tax investigation involving him, as his agency moved to clarify allegations of possible tax evasion amounting to more than 20 billion won (about P804 million).
On Saturday, Jan. 24, Fantagio, Eun-woo’s management agency, released a statement explaining that the matter centers on whether a family-owned company linked to the K-pop idol qualifies as a legitimate taxable entity.
“Nothing has been finally confirmed or officially notified at this time, and we plan to actively clarify the matter in accordance with lawful procedures,” the agency said.
South Korean media earlier reported that the Seoul Regional Tax Office audited the Astro member, and that the National Tax Service (NTS) issued a notice of an additional tax assessment covering income tax and related charges.
The reports alleged that Eun-woo’s income was structured through agreements involving his agency and a separate company under his mother’s name, prompting questions about tax compliance.
Fantagio said the singer-actor and his tax representative are fully cooperating with authorities and reiterated that the artist intends to fulfill all legal obligations.
The controversy has affected endorsements, with some South Korean brands reportedly pausing or removing campaigns featuring Eun-woo, though one company said its decision was unrelated to the tax issue.
Cha Eun-woo debuted as an actor in 2014 and as an idol with Astro in 2016. He enlisted for mandatory military service last July.
