Spanish singer Julio Iglesias is facing a criminal complaint after two former employees accused him of sexual abuse.
On Tuesday, Jan. 13, judicial sources said the complaint, filed on Jan. 5, is under review. According to Agence France-Presse, the report said the alleged incidents occurred in 2021 at Julio’s residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. A domestic worker and a physiotherapist accused the 82-year-old singer of sexual harassment, inappropriate touching, mistreatment, and, in one case, rape.
The allegations became public following a joint investigation by Spanish outlet elDiario.es and U.S.-based network Univision.
One of the women, identified as Rebeca, told Univision she felt “like an object” during her employment and alleged repeated unwanted physical contact. The second accuser, Laura, a Venezuelan physiotherapist, said she was 28 when she began working for Iglesias.
Neither elDiario.es nor Univision reported receiving a response from the singer regarding the accusations. AFP also said attempts to contact the singer for comment were unsuccessful.
The allegations prompted reactions from Spanish officials. Equality Minister Ana Redondo called for a “full investigation,” while Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz described the testimonies as “chilling.”
Julio Iglesias, born in Madrid, is one of the most successful Latin artists of all time, best known for romantic ballads that dominated charts in the 1970s and 1980s.
