Can cats eat fruits?

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their bodies are specifically designed to derive most of their nutrition from meat. Unlike humans, they do not require fruits or vegetables to maintain good health. Offering your cat occasional treats in the form of fruits can be a healthy and enjoyable way to diversify their diet.

“Cats might be curious about what you’re eating, including fruit, but not all fruits are safe for them. Small bits of apple (without seeds), bananas, or strawberries can be occasional treats that offer fiber and vitamins,” said Dr. Samantha Harton in “Which Fruits Can Cats Eat?” published in the Paws and Claws website.

“These should be given in tiny portions, as cats don’t digest sugar well and don’t need fruit in their diet,” added Dr. Harton.

Yana, a Save ALL rescue, is also given some fruits. Always make sure to prepare the fruit properly, removing seeds, pits, and tough skins that could pose choking hazards or contain toxic compounds.

Dr. Harton said these fruits are safe for cats:

Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the best fruits for cats. They are easy to digest, and packed with antioxidants that can support your cat’s immune system and overall health. Blueberries also contain a moderate amount of fiber, which can help with digestion.

Rinse them thoroughly and serve them whole or cut them into smaller pieces if your cat is not used to whole fruits.

Strawberries

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and fiber, and can thus help support your cat’s immune system, improve digestion, and even aid in hydration due to their high water content. Give strawberries sparingly as they are slightly higher in sugar than other fruits.

Wash them well and remove the green tops. You can cut the strawberries into small, bite-sized pieces.

Watermelon

Watermelon is a hydrating and refreshing fruit, making it an excellent choice for summer months. Its high water content is good for cats who do not drink enough water. Watermelon also contains vitamins A and C, both of which are important for maintaining healthy skin, eyes, and immune function.

Remove the seeds and rind. Cut the flesh into small pieces.

Peach, a Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL rescue, enjoys some fruits which can be a fun and nutritious treat when offered in moderation.

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe is another hydrating fruit due to its high water content. It is also rich in vitamins A and C. As it contains fiber, cantaloupe can aid in digestion.

Remove the seeds and rind before cutting it into small pieces.

Bananas

Bananas are safe for cats to eat, though they should only be offered as an occasional treat due to their higher sugar content. Bananas are rich in potassium, which is beneficial for maintaining heart and muscle health. For overweight or diabetic cats, this should be given less frequently.

Peel the fruit and cut it into small slices.

Apples (Without Seeds)

Apples contain fiber, vitamin C, and various antioxidants. Apples can promote good digestive health and provide a crunchy texture that many cats enjoy.

Remove the seeds before offering them, as apple seeds contain cyanide, which is toxic to both cats and humans.

Wash them thoroughly, remove the seeds, and slice them into small pieces.

Pineapple

Pineapple is high in vitamin C, manganese, and bromelain, which is an enzyme that may help with digestion. While pineapple can provide several health benefits, its high sugar content means that it should only be given occasionally.

Peel the fruit, remove any tough parts, and cut it into small pieces.

Pears (Without Seeds)

Pears are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Like apples, pears should have their seeds removed before being offered to your cat. The soft flesh of pears is easy for cats to digest and can make for a tasty and hydrating treat.

Wash the pear thoroughly, remove the seeds, and cut the fruit into small pieces.

Fruits to Avoid

While many fruits are safe for cats, there are a few that should be avoided entirely. Grapes and raisins, for instance, can be toxic to cats and can lead to kidney failure. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and limes should also be avoided, as they can cause digestive upset and toxicity in cats.
