Elections, post-mortem

“For all that’s worth, Monday’s midterm elections only signified one thing — a victory”

AND now, the election dust starts to settle.

From the rubble and ruckus caused by the campaign, we are reeling in with the results of the recent polls. Those who belong to the Top 12 — from Bong Go to Imee — are confident enough of having to keep their seats warm in their respective Senate bids. For the reelectionists and returnees, this was a successful fight for their power and influence.

For all that’s worth, Monday’s midterm elections only signified one thing — a victory.

A victory for millions of Filipinos around the world who showed up and took their stand through the ballot. It remained an energetic environment, despite incidents of violence and, of course, the usual ACM malfunctions, it brought voters to their polling centers and precincts to choose their own destiny for the next three years. Regardless of political color, the recent midterms were poised to be consequential for the nation’s immediate future.

This was also a win for the youth — the biggest chunk of this year’s voter population. Gen Z voters braved the expectations set in the surveys. The youth vote turned out huge for Aquino (#2), Pangilinan (#5), Mendoza (#21), and the Makabayan candidates (who got around three million votes). This idealism, depending on its variety, was also echoed in the desire to shun existing dynasties and celebrities with mass appeal. Truly, this was their night. This was their joyful moment.

But on the losing side, well, they may now need to put up their own channel to amplify their unnerving grief. It must have been hard for them to process everything that transpired throughout the entire results night. They might as well have to put up a station aptly named WLS – not related to the one based in Kamuning — to demonstrate these three things.

Supporters of some candidates have continuously whined about the conduct of the recent polls, which left their bets in the bottomline. For instance, people who have tapped their pots in favor of the Makabayan bets have consistently criticized moderate voters who showed disinterest in their causes. They are against tactical voting, arguing it would be best for future voters to take a definite stance and vote for their “genuine” candidates who could have represented crucial sectors in our society.

Without understanding how mainstream politics work, people in the progressive left can only grieve continuously if they fail to work around a broken political system.

The losing bets can take this chance to argue their fantasies of voter fraud. They can use this voice to amplify calls for a manual recount, which can only grow counterproductive to the results being counted electronically. Those who have tasted their wounds of defeat are set to raise their battles in the public square, even if these allegations of irregularities are set to be left unproven.

Apart from Makabayan, the so-called god Quiboloy has shown his distaste in his laughable standing — at number 31 — despite his huge machinery and loyalty to his compadre, tatay Digz.

The DDS, I would have to assume, may be swallowing on the losses incurred by some of their bets. Seeing their candidates lose to Bam and Kiko may have cost them their pride and ego in looking at their names placed within the top 6 of the magic 12. They were so sure in assuring themselves of a Philip Salvador or a Jimmy Bondoc win. Or of a Willie Revillame inside the Senate.

Truly, this loss has endured so heavily that they are working double time to put a stain on the opposition through their usual antics — black propaganda and disinformation. They are self-assured in securing greater chances of a revenge in 2028, given that Rody’s arrest fueled their uncontrolled rage.

Now, I guess, it’s time for us to be bystanders once again. After the infighting caused by this political campaign, it’s our turn to become witnesses to the impending political drama. Time can be proven valuable for us in the next three years as we continue to see this year’s unfortunate bets whining, losing, and sucking.
