Signal No. 5 over Babuyan Islands ahead of ‘Nando’ landfall

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) maintained Signal No. 5 over the northern and central portions of Babuyan Islands, where Super Typhoon ‘Nando’ is expected to make a landfall on Monday.

In an updated early morning bulletin on September 22, PAGASA said the highest tropical cyclone wind signals cover the Didicas, Panuitan, Calayan, Dalupri, Irao, Camiguin, and Pamuktan Islands as ‘Nando’ moved closer, threatening many provinces across Luzon.

As of 8:00 a.m. on Monday, the super typhoon was tracked 180 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan. It has further intensified packing 215 kilometers per hour (kph) of winds near the center and gustiness of up to 265 kph while moving westward at 20 kph.

PAGASA also hoisted higher tropical cyclone wind signals to other areas affected by the country’s biggest storm this year, including the following:

SIGNAL NO. 4

  • The southeastern portion of Batanes (Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, Uyugan, Sabtang), the rest of Babuyan Islands, the northeastern and northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Santa Praxedes, Claveria, Sanchez-Mira), the northernmost portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud)

SIGNAL NO. 3

  • The rest of Batanes, the northern and central portions of mainland Cagayan (Gonzaga, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Baggao, Alcala, Santo Niño, Lasam, Allacapan, Camalaniugan, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Aparri, Ballesteros, Abulug, Pamplona, Rizal, Amulung, Piat), the northern and central portions of Apayao (Flora, Santa Marcela, Pudtol, Luna, Calanasan, Kabugao), and the northern and central portions of Ilocos Norte (Carasi, Piddig, Vintar, Bacarra, Pasuquin, Burgos, Bangui, Dumalneg, Adams, Nueva Era, Solsona, Dingras, Sarrat, Laoag City, San Nicolas, Currimao, Paoay, City of Batac, Marcos, Banna)

SIGNAL NO. 2

  • The rest of Cagayan, Isabela, the rest of Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, the northern portion of Benguet (Mankayan, Buguias, Bakun, Kibungan), the northeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya (Diadi), the rest of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and the northern portion of La Union (Sudipen, Bangar, Luna, Balaoan, Santol)

“The wind signals warn the public of the general wind threat over an area due to the tropical cyclone. Local winds may be slightly stronger/enhanced in coastal and upland/mountainous areas exposed to winds,” PAGASA said.
