The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has officially declared Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) as the leading majority party while designating the Nacionalista Party as the principal minority party for the upcoming 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE).
“On the basis of the foregoing considerations, the dominant majority party and the dominant minority party, and the accredited majority political parties for the May 12, 2025, national and local elections (NLE) are: Dominant majority party — Lakas-CMD; Dominant minority party — Nacionalista Party,” according to the resolution issued by Comelec on Thursday.
Comelec chair George Erwin Garcia said the dominant majority party and dominant minority party will be given hard copies of the election returns (ERs). They will also have their own servers, which they can use for quick counting of votes, and counter-checking of the poll results.
The Comelec said a total of 11 political parties applied for accreditation for the determination of the dominant majority party, and dominant minority party for the upcoming elections on May 12.
They were ranked in accordance with their history, the number of incumbent elective officials, as well as their organized chapters in cities, municipalities, and provinces in the country.
Other accredited political parties include Akbayan Citizens Action Party; Aksyon Demokratiko; Liberal Party of the Philippines; Nationalist People’s Coalition; National Unity Party; Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan; Partido Demokratikong Reporma; Partido Federal ng Pilipinas; and United Nationalist Alliance.
Speaker Martin Romualdez meanwhile welcomed the Comelec declaration, calling it a reaffirmation of the party’s legacy of leadership and action.
As Lakas-CMD president, Romualdez highlighted the party’s longstanding contributions to national development, citing its history of producing two presidents and shaping key policies that strengthened the economy, enhanced national security, and built critical infrastructure.
“Lakas-CMD has been here before. We have led, we have governed and we have delivered. Our party has produced two Presidents and played a major role in shaping policies that strengthened the economy, improved national security, and built critical infrastructure,” Romualdez said.
The House leader emphasized that Lakas-CMD’s dominant status comes with the responsibility of advancing the Bagong Pilipinas agenda, which aims to ensure a more efficient government, inclusive economic growth and the restoration of public trust in institutions.
As the dominant majority party, Lakas-CMD is committed to pushing for legislative and policy reforms that align with these national objectives.
The recognition also reinforces the party’s role in upholding electoral integrity and democratic processes, Romualdez said.
“This also means ensuring that the 2025 elections are clean, credible and orderly. Dominant status comes with the duty to help safeguard the democratic process, making sure that the people’s will is upheld and that governance remains focused on their needs,” he said.
Romualdez urged Lakas-CMD members and supporters to view this recognition not as an accolade, but as a challenge to further elevate public service.
The Speaker reaffirmed Lakas-CMD’s commitment to delivering results-driven governance and working with all sectors to achieve national progress.
