Vaping can lead to fatal lung damage — DOH

The Department of Health on Friday issued a warning against a serious and potentially fatal lung disease known as “Popcorn Lung,” which it said can be caused by chemicals found in some vape products.

Medically known as bronchiolitis obliterans, Popcorn Lung damages the small airways in the lungs, leading to inflammation, scarring, and permanent breathing difficulties.

The DOH said diacetyl, a harmful chemical used to flavor certain vape juices, has been identified as a leading cause of the illness.

“Don’t ever start using vapes. Don’t smoke. Don’t vape,” it said in a statement.

The agency emphasized that no form of vaping is safe, especially for young people who are increasingly drawn to flavored e-cigarettes marketed as less harmful alternatives.

To combat the growing use of vapes and tobacco products among minors, the DOH recently launched a health literacy campaign at Eusebio High School in Pasig City.

As part of the initiative, the department established the country’s first student-led anti-vape and anti-tobacco council, aiming to empower youth to spread awareness about the dangers of nicotine addiction.

The campaign seeks to debunk myths surrounding vape use and promote healthier, smoke-free environments in schools.

The DOH urged students to think twice before spending money on vape pods, encouraging them instead to save for more valuable investments such as gadgets or educational tools.

Officials also reminded the public that help is available through the DOH Quitline 1558, a free service offering counseling and support for those who wish to quit smoking or vaping.
