The appointment was announced in a Vatican bulletin on January 11, 2025, which also included other resignations and appointments.

In December 2024, David was elevated to the College of Cardinals, becoming the 10th cardinal from the Philippines.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith is responsible for safeguarding the faith and morals of the Catholic Church. It also promotes theological research and education to enhance the understanding and transmission of the faith, helping to respond to the challenges posed by scientific progress and societal developments.
