Comelec accepts malls as voting centers for Iloilo, Roxas Cities in 2025 polls

Iloilo City — In a landmark move to boost voter turnout and convenience, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) officially approved voting in malls in Iloilo City and Roxas City for the 2025 midterm elections.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to make voting more accessible, particularly for the elderly, expectant mothers, and other marginalized groups who may find traditional voting locations less convenient.

Lawyer and Iloilo City Election Officer Pinky Tentativa announced the approval, noting that a public consultation held on October 16 revealed strong local support for mall voting.

“The consultation process went smoothly, with no significant issues raised, which paved the way for Comelec’s central office to give immediate approval,” Tentativa stated.

Four malls in Iloilo City have been selected as designated voting centers, aiming to streamline the election process for residents in various barangays:

• Festive Walk Mall and SM City Iloilo will serve voters residing in Barangays Airport and Taft North, Mandurriao.

• Robinsons Place Iloilo will cater to voters from Barangays San Jose, Magsaysay, and Osmeña.

• Robinsons Jaro will serve voters from Barangay San Vicente.

The shift to mall voting reflects Comelec’s commitment to making voting more comfortable and accessible for groups who often face difficulties at traditional polling places.

Mall voting offers numerous advantages, including air-conditioned environments, wider and more accessible parking options, wheelchair access, and enhanced security, creating a smoother and more pleasant voting experience for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.

“This approach not only eases the voting process for marginalized sectors but also introduces a more organized and potentially quicker voting experience,” Tentativa explained.

“It’s about ensuring that everyone can exercise their right to vote in an environment that supports their needs.”

Comelec emphasized that security will be a top priority in the mall voting centers, with plans to deploy additional personnel to maintain order.

Mall voting booths will be strategically placed within the malls to facilitate easy access, and election staff will provide guidance to voters as they navigate the new process.
