Makati 2nd District Rep. Luis Campos Jr. on Saturday filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for the city’s top local post in the upcoming midterm elections.
Campos, who is in his third and last term as congressman, seeks to run for mayor with incumbent 1st District Rep. Romulo Peña Jr. as his vice mayor.
A businessman, Campos succeeded his wife, incumbent Mayor Abigail Binay, who served as congresswoman in the second district from 2007 to 2016.
Campos and Peña, running under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), will be competing with the tandem of Binay’s sister, Sen. Nancy Binay, and actor-turned-politician Monsour del Rosario.
This would mark the second time that members of the Binay family competed for the same position in Makati, as Abigail and her brother, Junjun Binay, both ran for mayor in 2019. In that election, Abigail won with a significant lead.
Now in her third and final term as Makati mayor, Abigail is running for senator under the administration slate Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas, recently formed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Makati City, with over 370,000 registered voters, has long been a stronghold of the Binay family since former Vice President Jejomar Binay was appointed the city’s officer-in-charge during the time of the late former President Corazon Aquino in 1986.
