The Chinese ambassador to the Philippines met with a local athletic delegation on Wednesday to discuss boosting youth sports training and bilateral athletic exchanges, while outlining key progress in easing maritime tensions and boosting tourism.
Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan hosted a delegation from the Filipino Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF) at his residence on May 13, 2026. During the meeting, FCAAF president William Castro outlined the federation’s 38-year history, ongoing programs and future initiatives to promote sports among Filipino Chinese communities.
Castro highlighted close Philippines–China cooperation in arts, entertainment, sports and culture. He noted particularly strong exchange mechanisms in the sports sector and thanked Jing for the embassy’s full support of Filipino Chinese sports and bilateral sports exchanges.
Jing said sports and music transcend borders and described sports exchanges as a key link for fostering friendship between the Philippines and China.
Since taking up his post five months ago, Jing summarized four priorities, including “levelling out” by restarting political talks. He noted that three rounds of talks have been held and a roadmap agreed to ease maritime tensions.
His other priorities include “walking closer” by simplifying visa procedures and opening more direct flights, which helped Chinese tourist arrivals rise 57 percent in the first quarter of 2026 year‑on‑year. He also emphasized defending truthful, objective bilateral relations, countering false accusations and deepening economic, trade, scientific and law-enforcement cooperation.
During the meeting, the group and the embassy staff discussed upcoming sports activities, focusing on promoting youth sports training within the Filipino Chinese community and supporting the development of local Philippine sports talent.
