AFP ready to assist PNP during EDSA@40 activities

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday said it recognizes public assemblies expected in Metro Manila on February 25 in connection with the 40th anniversary of the First EDSA People Power Revolution, vowing to uphold and protect the constitutional rights of citizens to express their views.

In a statement, the military reiterated its commitment to remain professional and non-partisan. The organization emphasized that it does not engage in political activities and remains focused on its core mandate of securing state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The AFP underscored that the Philippine National Police (PNP) shoulders primary responsibility for maintaining peace and order during public gatherings.

Nonetheless, the military stands ready to assist law enforcement authorities upon request and as directed by proper authority, in accordance with established operational procedures and interagency coordination.

“We remain steadfast in ensuring stability and security while fully respecting democratic processes, civil liberties, and the rights of all Filipinos,” it said.

The AFP also assured the public that appropriate readiness measures are in place as part of its standard preparedness posture.

In a separate statement, the AFP National Capital Region Command (NCRCOM) acknowledged the scheduled mass gatherings of several groups from different sectors that are set to hold a third iteration of the Trillion Peso March to protest against corruption and political dynasties.

The command added that as part of routine preparedness, appropriate security measures are in place to help ensure public safety while fully respecting civil liberties, with the aim of supporting a peaceful and orderly commemoration.

“Our objective is to help ensure that the activities remain peaceful, orderly, and secure for everyone.” AFP Spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said.

February 25 commemorates the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution that ousted the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. — father of the current president Marcos Jr.— and installed Corazon Aquino, widow of slain senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., as president.
