LTO issues show cause order vs PNP over viral traffic violation

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order against the Philippine National Police (PNP) as the registered owner of a mobile patrol car involved in a viral traffic violation in Manila.

In a Facebook post, the LTO said the incident occurred along Taft Avenue near the Philippine General Hospital.

Video footage reviewed by the LTO showed the patrol car abruptly cutting in front of another vehicle and remaining stationary even after the traffic light turned green. The vehicle reportedly blocked traffic and only moved when the signal turned red.

The LTO said the driver’s actions created a dangerous situation, stressing that law enforcers must set an example in obeying traffic rules.

The registered owner and the driver were ordered to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division at its Quezon City headquarters on Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.

The agency directed the PNP to explain why the driver should not be charged with reckless driving and obstruction of traffic, and why his license should not be suspended or revoked for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver’s license will be suspended for 90 days upon surrender, while the patrol car has been placed on alarm status.
