Solons seek probe into sunken M/V Trisha Kerstin 3

Lawmakers on Tuesday sought an investigation into Aleson Shipping Lines following the capsizing of the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, where at least 19 people were killed in the incident, while 10 others remained missing as of last count.

In a privilege speech, Kusug Tausug party-list Rep. Aiman Tan pressed for a full and independent investigation into the incident.

“This tragedy is not merely a statistic. It is a profound loss that calls for reflection, responsibility, and action. We cannot allow the usual cycle to repeat itself… I therefore call for a full and independent investigation,” Tan said.

“We owe it to the victims to pursue accountability where warranted, to strengthen maritime safety oversight, and to ensure that aid and assistance to affected families is sustained beyond headlines,” he added, condemning the incident.

Similarly, Basilan Rep. Yusop Alano demanded an urgent, independent, and comprehensive investigation into the incident, which he said is the third major maritime accident involving the same company in the past decade.

“Three major incidents within a single decade cannot reasonably be attributed to misfortune alone. They point to systemic shortcomings that were allowed to persist, gradually normalized, and insufficiently addressed,” he said, urging Congress to exact accountability for both operators and regulators.

Alano also called for a comprehensive safety audit of all Aleson Shipping vessels.  He also pressed for a congressional inquiry into the actions of the Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Industry Authority, and other concerned agencies.
