At least five people were injured after a portion of the landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City collapsed on Thursday afternoon.
As of 7:00 p.m., one patient was unresponsive and rushed to North General Hospital, while four others were brought to Visayas Community Medical Center, according to Councilor Dave Tumulak, chairperson of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC).
Earlier, Councilor Joel Garganera confirmed that the landfill had collapsed around 5:00 p.m., which triggered an immediate deployment of emergency responders to the site.
In a statement, Mayor Nestor Archival said several individuals were initially reported trapped after a landslide struck the Binaliw landfill. This has prompted the city to activate its disaster response protocols.
In a post on his Facebook account, Archival said search and rescue operations are ongoing to rescue people trapped as a result of the landslide.
“I am closely monitoring the situation and will be heading to the Binaliw landfill as soon as possible to personally check the situation and coordinate further actions,” Archival said in a mix of English and Cebuano.
