The Philippines, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), voiced concern over unfolding developments in Venezuela, emphasizing their impact on regional peace and the rules-based international order.
In a statement released yesterday, the DFA said it recognized the United States’ stated security concerns but emphasized the Philippines’ adherence to international law.
“While acknowledging the United States’ underlying security considerations, the Philippines stresses the relevant principles of international law, including the independence and sovereign equality of states, the peaceful resolution of disputes, the prohibition against the threat or use of force, and non-interference in the domestic affairs of sovereign states,” the statement read.
The DFA reiterated the Philippines’ respect for state sovereignty, peaceful dispute resolution, the prohibition of force, and non-interference in the internal matters of other states.
This statement follows President Donald Trump’s announcement on Truth Social that the U.S. capture and rendition of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, to the US on charges of narco-terrorism.
The DFA also urged all parties involved to uphold international law, including the UN Charter, and to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation of conflict.
“The Philippines calls on concerned parties to respect international law, including the UN Charter, exercise restraint to prevent escalation of conflict, restore peace and order in Venezuela and promote the safety and well-being of all the people, including the Filipinos living in Venezuela and the surrounding countries,” the statement added.
Earlier, Trump stated that the U.S. would “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper, and judicious transition” could be established.
For its part, on Saturday, January 3, the Philippine Embassy in Colombia, which oversees Venezuela, has advised Filipinos in the region to be cautious about their personal safety and to avoid situations that may pose security risks.
Additionally, the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá, which acts as a non-resident mission for Venezuela, has also issued a travel and safety advisory for Filipinos in Venezuela.
