The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday reported 140 firework-related injuries recorded nationwide from Dec. 21 to 30, based on monitoring from 62 sentinel hospitals.
Children aged 5 to 14 accounted for 78 cases, or 58% of the total, underscoring the continued vulnerability of minors during the holiday period.
Overall, 95 patients, or 68% of the injured, were 19 years old and below, while 32% involved adults aged 20 and above.
Compared with the same period last year, the number of cases reflects a 23% decline from the 182 injuries recorded as of Dec. 30, 2024.

The DOH identified five-star firecrackers and improvised cannons as the leading causes of injuries and urged the public to seek immediate hospital care for any firework-related accident to prevent complications.
Authorities also reminded the public to call the National Emergency Hotline 911 for urgent medical assistance.
Meanwhile, Philippine National Police (PNP) acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reiterated the strict enforcement of a one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing of firearms, warning that violators will face immediate sanctions.
“Personnel found guilty of indiscriminate firing shall face immediate administrative and criminal liability, without warning or second chances,” Nartatez said.
He added that unit commanders will be held accountable under the principle of command responsibility and called on police personnel to set an example of discipline and restraint as the nation welcomes the New Year.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), meanwhile, reminded its personnel to strictly observe discipline and existing regulations on the safe and responsible handling of firearms during the holiday season.
“There is no specific directive mandating the taping of firearms for the New Year, but all personnel are individually responsible for upholding the highest standards of professionalism at all times,” the AFP said, adding that commanders have been directed to reinforce supervision and vigilance to ensure peaceful and orderly celebrations.
