The government is now preparing for the EDSA rehabilitation project, set to commence on Christmas Eve, utilizing advanced technology aimed at improving both the speed and durability of the highway rehabilitation process.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) intends to accelerate the project’s timeline, shortening it to eight months to minimize the disruption for motorists passing through the area.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon explained that the rehabilitation will be executed in two phases and is expected to be completed within eight months, a significant reduction from the initial two-year timeline.
According to the revised plan, the first four months will address the section from Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City to Orense Street in Makati City, while the subsequent four months will concentrate on rehabilitating the remainder of EDSA.
The updated plan is also anticipated to lower project costs to approximately P6 billion, resulting in savings of up to P11 billion compared to the previous P17 billion proposal.
Initial works are scheduled to begin at 12 a.m. on December 24, 2025, and will continue until 4 a.m. on January 5, 2026.
From December 24 to 27, 2025, the planned repair works include:
Concrete reblocking works
Southbound:
- December 24-27, 2025: Work will take place from P. Celle Street to Roxas Boulevard, impacting only the inner lane.
- December 26-27, 2025: Work will occur from Tramo Flyover to P. Celle Street, also restricted to the inner lane.
Northbound:
- December 24-27, 2025: Rehabilitation will extend from Roxas Boulevard to Park Avenue, affecting the inner lane.
- December 27, 2025: Work will proceed from Park Avenue to Taft Avenue, which will also impact the inner lane.
Asphalt Overlay
Southbound:
- December 25, 2025: Overlay operations will take place from EDSA Orense to Urdaneta Village.
- December 26, 2025: The work will progress from EDSA Orense to Magallanes Interchange.
- December 27, 2025: Operations will extend from Tramo to Loring Street, transitioning from the inner lane to the outer lane.
The DPWH will announce a revised schedule for repair activities scheduled from Dec. 28, 2025, to Jan. 5, 2026.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes said they are taking advantage of the holiday season, as historical data shows that traffic tends to be lighter during this time when many residents of Metro Manila are either traveling abroad or visiting their home provinces.
He mentioned that the updated rehabilitation framework is designed to minimize disruptions and eliminates the necessity for measures such as increasing the number of units on the EDSA Busway and suspending toll fees on certain segments of the Skyway.
There will be no alterations to the number coding scheme throughout the duration of the rehabilitation works.
“In addition to deploying more MMDA personnel, we will also implement alternative routes to maintain a steady flow of traffic,” Artes said.
