THE Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) marked the Urban Poor Solidarity Week by conferring special recognitions to individuals, groups, and organizations who made significant contributions to public service.
Over 30,000 leaders and representatives of urban poor organizations, national government agencies, non-government organizations, and local government units took part in the celebration to support PCUP’s advocacy for the welfare and development of the urban poor communities nationwide.
The PCUP conducted regionalized celebrations under the theme “Sama-sama sa Pag-ALPAS, sa Bagong Pilipinas” across the country, highlighting inclusive participation and the broader reach of government programs.
In Metro Manila, the observance took place in Quezon City, led by Mayor Joy Belmonte, who given the Champion of the Urban Poor Award (CUPA) in recognition of her continued support for the urban poor sector.
In Luzon, Pampanga Municipal Trial Court Judge Maria Rhodora Malabag-Peralta honored for her outstanding contributions and dedication to local communities.
In the Visayas, three individuals and organizations received the CUPA, including the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Cebu chapter, the Tzu Chi Foundation, and Marjorie Anne Sun Ng.
In Mindanao, Senator Erwin Tulfo was recognized for his compassion and support for the urban poor sector.
The PCUP also conferred awards to agencies and organizations that demonstrated dedication, excellence, and commitment to promoting community welfare and helping communities break free from poverty.
The Best Government Agency awardees included the Department of Labor and Employment in the National Capital Region, the National Housing Authority in Region 2 and the Cordillera Administrative Region, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Region 7.
The Best Local Government Unit awardees were Muntinlupa City, San Fernando City in Pampanga, Talisay City in the Visayas, Iloilo City, and Island Garden City in Samal.
PCUP chairperson and chief executive officer Michelle Anne Gonzales expressed her gratitude to all partners from the national and local governments, organizations, individuals and urban poor organizations for their continued support of the Commission’s programs.
She cited the importance of collective action to address the challenges faced by the urban poor.
