MMDA rolls out traffic scheme on Marcos Highway

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Thursday it will enforce a traffic management scheme aimed at reducing congestion on Marcos Highway.

“We are now implementing the necessary interventions to ensure smoother traffic flow along Marcos Highway. Part of these efforts are the installation of additional traffic signages, deployment of additional personnel, and close coordination with the concerned LGUs,” said MMDA Chairman Don Artes.

This initiative comes in response to the increasing volume of vehicles entering and exiting Metro Manila, especially this holiday season when traffic typically worsens.

The MMDA’s efforts focus on improving traffic flow and providing relief to motorists along this busy route.

The scheme will be activated during periods of gridlock to enable uninterrupted movement from Felix Avenue to Gil Fernando Avenue, eliminating the need for vehicles to use the existing U-turn slot.

One proposed solution is opening the intersection at Marcos Highway and Gil Fernando Avenue by replacing concrete barriers with movable orange plastic barriers to allow easier adjustments during peak hours.

MMDA traffic enforcers will oversee the intersection to ensure smooth flow.

On Wednesday, MMDA officials, local government representatives from Cainta, Antipolo, Marikina, and Pasig, and other government agencies inspected the area to evaluate bottlenecks, vehicular flow, and safety issues.

Artes said findings from the inspection will guide targeted traffic management measures, signal timing optimization, and infrastructure adjustments.

An extension of the concrete barrier line (100 meters) at the KFC U-turn slot will be built to maintain lane discipline and prevent vehicles from Nicanor Roxas Street from encroaching into the U-turn queue.

The MMDA will also conduct a traffic volume count to determine necessary signal phasing.

LGUs will work with nearby subdivisions to allow access for bypassing private vehicles.

The MMDA stressed the need to harmonize traffic rules among LGUs—particularly the uniform enforcement of truck bans.

The four LGUs have agreed to sign a memorandum of agreement with the MMDA for strict enforcement of anti-illegal terminal and anti-illegal vendor rules in the area.
