Gov’t ready for PUV strike today—MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced the government’s preparedness for transport protests organized by the Malayang Alyansa ng Bus Employees at Laborers (Manibela).

The agency is coordinating with law enforcement to ensure that traffic flow remains smooth and that commuters are not severely impacted. Alternative transportation options will be available to accommodate those affected by the demonstrations.

“The lead (agencies) will be the DOTr (Department of Transportation) and LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board). But we are preparing augmentation in case it is needed. We will make sure that the protest will have minimal impact on the commuters,” said MMDA Chairman Romando Artes in a message sent to Manila Standard.

Manibela chairperson Mar Valbuena said the 3-day strike from December 9 to 11 will proceed if authorities continue to provide vague assurances amidst an ongoing “corrupt and abusive” transportation system.

He added the constant harassment faced by drivers, which includes sudden license suspensions, arbitrary imposition of demerit points, and fines that appear more punitive than corrective.

This situation has prompted the group to take a stand through the strike as they demand accountability and reform within the transportation framework.

Artes said concerned government agencies are consistently ready for these demonstrations.

MMDA assets, which include buses and other vehicles marked with “Libreng Sakay,” will be on standby and are ready to be dispatched to accommodate those who will be affected.

The agency has over 20 assets ready to assist passengers in need.

The MMDA appealed to protesters not to harass fellow drivers who will continue to work, stating that they should not stop those who want to earn a living for their families.

The MMDA acknowledged the fact that transport strikes had been successful in the past, paralyzing public transportation in Metro Manila and other urban areas across the country, sometimes leading to class suspensions.

But in recent years, the agency observed minimal effects due to strategic government planning to cushion the impact, including the deployment of vehicles for ‘libreng sakay’ or free rides.
