No classes until Oct. 4 in Masbate after state of calamity

Classes at all levels in Masbate province will remain suspended from September 29 to October 4, 2025 following the declaration of a state of calamity in the wake of Typhoon Opong.

Governor Richard Kho issued the directive on Sunday, citing the safety of students as many classrooms and school facilities sustained serious damage from the storm.

“We urge everyone to remain vigilant, cooperative, and resilient as we work together toward recovery,” Kho said in a statement.

In addition to the province-wide suspension, several municipalities and Masbate City also announced extended class cancellations to allow for repairs and rehabilitation of schools.

Other parts of Luzon likewise declared localized suspensions on Monday, September 29. In Calasiao, Pangasinan, classes from kindergarten to senior high school in public schools were called off.

Nationwide, the series of storms and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) have left 26 people dead, 33 injured, and 14 missing.

Nearly 2.8 million individuals have been affected across the country, with 53 cities and municipalities declaring a state of calamity.
