The National Electrification Administration (NEA) reported Monday that the Batanes and Abra electric cooperatives have experienced total power interruptions due to Super Typhoon ‘Nando.’
The NEA Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (DRRMD) said that as of 3 p.m., nine electric cooperatives were experiencing partial power outages in Luzon.
These include: Batangas Electric Cooperative 2, Benguet Electric Cooperative, Cagayan Electric Cooperative 1 and 2, Ifugao Electric Cooperative, Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative, Lubang Electric Cooperative, Mountain Province Electric Cooperative and Pangasinan Electric Cooperative 3.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that several transmission lines were unavailable as of 5 p.m. Monday because of the super typhoon.
The affected lines include the San Esteban-Bangued 69kV Line in Abra, the Lal-lo-Sta. Ana 69kV Line affecting customers in Cagayan, and the Magapit-Camalaniugan 69kV Line, which also affects customers in Cagayan.
“Inspection and restoration of lines in the affected areas will be in full swing once the weather allows,” NGCP said.
The company noted that the power loss could be caused by affected transmission facilities of NGCP or distribution facilities of local utilities or electric cooperatives.
“Specific cities and municipalities affected by the power interruptions are determined by concerned distribution utilities, unless the outage affects the entire franchise area,” it said.
For its part, Manila Electric Company (Meralco) assured its customers that its crews were prepared to respond to service concerns.
“Our crews and personnel are strategically deployed and on standby 24/7,” said Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president. “We urge everyone to prioritize safety and remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas.”
