PMA suspends cadets over alleged hazing, cites zero-tolerance policy

The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) on Monday reiterated its strict zero-tolerance policy on maltreatment following allegations of hazing against its four cadets as reported by the Baguio City Police.

“Such acts have no place in our institution, and we remain resolute in our commitment to safeguarding the well-being and holistic development of our cadets,” PMA Spokesperson Lt. Jesse Nestor Saludo told the Manila Standard.

The PMA also confirmed that a thorough investigation has been conducted in full compliance with the due process requirements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP).

Following an internal investigation, two first-year cadets were found guilty of physically harming a classmate. They have been suspended from training for one year in accordance with CCAFP regulations.

A third-year cadet who served as the squad leader was also penalized under the principle of command responsibility for failing to prevent the abuse. He received 60 demerits, 120 touring hours, and 120 days of confinement.

Another upper class cadet implicated in the case, meanwhile, was cleared of any wrongdoing after the investigation found no evidence linking him to the incident.

The victim, also a first-year cadet, is currently on indefinite leave and awaiting discharge from the training program due to medical reasons unrelated to the injury sustained, as determined by the AFP Medical Board.

While appropriate disciplinary actions have already been imposed in accordance with CCAFP regulations, Saludo said the victim retains the right to pursue any legal remedies in civilian courts should he choose to do so.

“The PMA emphasizes that this incident is an isolated and rare occurrence. Since 2018, the Academy has implemented comprehensive reforms in its training system, policies, and supervision mechanisms to prevent maltreatment and to foster a culture of respect, discipline, and professionalism among cadets,” Saludo added.

Reports from Baguio City Police said the victim allegedly experienced “physical abuse and humiliation” from September 2 to 29, 2024.
