MMDA to use AI for advanced traffic detection

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) plans to implement artificial intelligence (AI) for advanced traffic detection as part of a significant shift in traffic management through its adaptive signaling system.

This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to adopt the latest technologies and innovations to enhance public service.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the agency aims to improve traffic detection by transitioning from ground loop detectors to video detectors.

“As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step toward ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency. Hopefully, by next year, this innovation will be implemented,” he said.

According to the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), traffic signal systems that use video detectors are less vulnerable to damage caused by roadworks, adverse weather conditions, and physical interference.

Equipped with AI technology, these systems can capture additional information about vehicles, including speed, direction, and license plate numbers.

Artes also presented several videos to the media demonstrating issues such as the incompatibility of traffic signal countdown timers, drivers making split-second decisions to speed through intersections, and incidents of running red lights.

Last week, the MMDA announced the removal of traffic light countdown timers at 96 intersections along major thoroughfares in Metro Manila.

These outdated fixed-timer traffic lights have been replaced with an adaptive signaling system that utilizes sensors. The complete decommissioning of the timers was carried out by the TEC.
