Romualdez formally retains seat as Leyte representative

House Speaker Martin Romualdez was officially proclaimed Tuesday as the winning candidate for representative of Leyte’s first district following the May 12, 2025 midterm elections.

Romualdez—also the president of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD)—secured his third consecutive term and sixth overall in the House of Representatives by gaining 83,601 votes. He ran unopposed.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Provincial Board of Canvassers, chaired by lawyer Ma. Goretti Caseñas-Cañas officially confirmed the Romualdez’s victory during a session at the New Provincial Capitol in Palo, Leyte.

Following his proclamation, the seasoned legislator expressed his deep gratitude to his constituents for their continuing trust and support.

“I am very grateful to my compatriots in Leyte First District, especially in Tacloban City, for another opportunity to serve,” Romualdez said in Tagalog.

“This victory is not my victory, but the victory of our entire district—of every Waray family that continues to trust in our leadership. With your help, the voice of Leyte in Congress will be stronger. We can do more, we can help more,” he added.

As House Speaker, Romualdez has committed to pushing forward a legislative agenda that promotes inclusive development and economic resilience, while continuing to prioritize the needs of his constituents in Leyte.

“I assure you: your trust will not be wasted. We will continue to deliver projects, programs, and care to every barangay, every home. The Leyte First District will continue to be a model of recovery, development, and good governance,” he said.

Leyte’s first district encompasses Tacloban City and the municipalities of Palo, Alangalang, Babatngon, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Tanauan, and Tolosa.

“Tacloban, as the heart of Eastern Visayas, will remain the center of our plans. From infrastructure to social services, progress will continue,” Romualdez said.

Under his leadership, the House passed 75 national laws and 112 local laws, including 30 Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) priority measures, eight of which directly support President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s vision for the country’s prosperity.
