AFP pushes modernization, focuses on missile systems

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is actively pursuing an accelerated modernization program focused on acquiring sophisticated missile systems, additional warships, and multi-role fighter jets.

This initiative aims to establish a robust defense posture and finalize the integration of the military’s air and missile defense capabilities. The plans were revealed by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. during his recent participation in the 2025 Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, India.

Brawner emphasized the critical need for these acquisitions to enhance the AFP’s operational capabilities and strengthen its deterrence in response to the evolving security landscape within the Indo-Pacific region.

He specifically highlighted the intention to procure more missile systems to achieve comprehensive air and missile defense integration. Furthermore, the acquisition of additional warships and multi-role fighter jets is central to building a formidable and dependable deterrent force.

A key aspect of the AFP’s modernization strategy involves fostering strong defense partnerships, with India identified as a particularly vital ally. The Philippines received its initial batch of BrahMos cruise missiles from India in April 2024.
