The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday announced necessary measures have been implemented in preparation for a Manila rally organized by supporters of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Scheduled on Saturday afternoon in Liwasang Bonifacio, the rally is just a day after the pre-trial proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning Duterte, who faces allegations of crimes against humanity in connection with his administration’s drug war.
“We are looking closely at the reported rally sites, and it is normal for the PNP to adjust to make sure that the PNP is prepared,” PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said in an interview.
“When there is a rally, there are definitely police there, watching over and protecting the rally participants. It’s for their security and safety, not for arguments,” she added.
The spokesperson said the PNP will take all necessary steps to prevent any untoward incidents during the pro-Duterte rally.
“We have not yet monitored any tension between those who rallied to show support for our former president. Because our police officers are just there, observing, keeping watch to maintain order,” Fajardo said.
